Connecticut basketball players starring for Division I teams across the nation

Just a sampling of Connecticut players starring and playing at NCAA Division I colleges. Clockwise, from top left: Notre Dame-WH’s Tremont Waters (at LSU); Sacred Heart-Waterbury’s Mustapha Heron (Auburn), Fairfield Prep’s Paschal Chukwu (Syracuse), Bloomfield’s Tyrique Jones (Xavier), Bunnell’s Isaac Vann (VCU). Photos via The Associated Press.

Paschal Chukwu swats away a shot and teammate Tremont Waters comes up with the loose ball.

Waters pushes the ball up the floor and hands it off to Jared Wilson-Frame, who gets it to Mustapha Heron on the wing. Heron drives the ball to the hole strong but the shot is off the mark.

Tyrique Jones swoops in for the offensive rebound and kicks it back out to Waters, who puts up the 3-pointer and … it’s good!

Such a scenario will never play out in a college basketball game. But imagine if it did.

You could field a pretty good roster of players who were either born in or grew up in Connecticut and are currently playing Division I college ball.

Waters, Heron, Jones, Chukwu and Wilson-Frame might be your starting five, but you could bring Cane Broome or Khalil Dukes or Eli Pemberton or Mike McGuirl or Raiquan Clark or Isaac Vann off the bench.

And that’s not even counting Steve Enoch, currently sitting out as a transfer from UConn to Louisville.

Point is, Division I college basketball is as flush with Connecticut-based talent as it’s been in a long while. Maybe ever.

“I think Connecticut basketball in the last seven, eight years has been getting consistently better,” said Notre Dame-West Haven coach Jason Shea. “The AAU basketball scene in New England is very strong. Players, as a result, are playing 10, 11 months out of the year. They’re getting coaching throughout the year, they’re training year-round, and as a result, they’re getting a lot better.”

Just look across the landscape, from Long Island to Manhattan (Kansas), Boston to Baton Rouge, Quinnipiac to the Queen City, Connecticut players are thriving in the D-I ranks. Two of the top players in the Southeastern Conference — Waters and Heron — hail from New Haven and Waterbury, respectively. Two others — Jones and Broome — are crosstown rivals in Cincinnati.

There are four Connecticut products on Iona’s roster alone. In fact, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is home to no less than 11 Nutmeggers — including Dukes, who leads the league in scoring at Niagara.

In all, there are at least 30 players who were either born in or grew up in Connecticut currently populating Division I rosters. And that’s not even counting Division II or III, which would likely at least triple that number.

“I think it’s tremendous,” said Chaise Daniels, who grew up in Meriden, played at Hillhouse and is now a senior forward at Quinnipiac. “I think it’s amazing to see guys I grew up with, played basketball with a lot in Connecticut, put out for the state.”

SECond to None

Waters is the best of the bunch. Barely six months after graduating from Notre Dame-West Haven, the 5-foot-11 point guard is a bona fide star at LSU. He leads the league in steals (2.1 per game), is second in assists (5.9) and eighth in scoring (15.8).

Did we mention he’s just a freshman?

“I can’t tell you I’m surprised at all,” said Shea. “When he left, I told my coaching staff he had the opportunity to potentially play one year and be in the NBA. He’s so skilled, and when you have that type of skill set, you can pretty much play at any level. He’s a lot more athletic than people give him credit for.”

What’s perhaps more surprising is that, in a league that plays all its home games south of the Mason-Dixon line, there are two Connecticut natives who grew up about 20 miles apart among the SEC’s top players. Heron, a sophomore at Auburn, ranks 11th in the league in scoring at 15 per contest.

Heron, a 6-5 guard, is happy to see his former Waterbury Storm travel teammate’s success.

“I think it’s well-deserved,” Heron said. “Very few people know how hard (Waters) worked when he was younger, the type of regimen he was on.”

Waters and Heron are hardly the only two Nutmeggers standing out in power conferences. In the ACC, Wilson-Frame, a junior from Hartford, is averaging 12.1 points per game for Pittsburgh. Chukwu, a 7-footer who was born in Nigeria but played at Fairfield Prep for two years and now calls Westport home, is second in the league in blocked shots at 3.1 per game.

Connecticut natives are making strong contributions for some of the nation’s top teams. Broome, of East Hartford, is averaging 8.6 points per game for No. 9 Cincinnati after transferring from Sacred Heart and sitting out last season. Right across town, Jones, a 6-8 sophomore from Bloomfield, is one of the top rebounders for eighth-ranked Xavier.

Out in Big 12 country, Kansas State coach Bruce Weber recently scrapped plans to redshirt McGuirl. The East Catholic High product has played in the Wildcats’ last four games.

Yup, Connecticut players are contributing in nearly all the power conferences. Except, you’ll notice, at UConn. The Huskies don’t have a single scholarship player from the state after Norwalk’s Enoch transferred last spring.

The Huskies were never heavy on Heron while he was starring at Sacred Heart High, and the feeling was somewhat mutual.

“I just didn’t want to stay at home,” he recently told Hearst Media Connecticut. “I took care of my recruiting early.”

Heron committed to Pittsburgh in January, 2014, de-committed a little over a year later and wound up pledging to Auburn in August of 2015.

UConn showed more interest in Waters, especially after he backed out of his commitment to Georgetown last spring. But the interest just wasn’t there on Waters’ part, according to members of the UConn coaching staff. Will Wade offered Waters the keys to the car at LSU, and he’s taken off.

MAAC Daddies

No league in the country has a heavier Connecticut flavor than the MAAC.

“I think Connecticut’s had about a six-year run of a pretty good group of high school players,” said Iona assistant coach Jared Grasso, a former Quinnipiac standout. “For us, we kind of saw that and were able to capitalize.”

Indeed, four of Iona’s 13 scholarship players are Nutmeggers — Hartford’s E.J. Crawford (11.9 ppg), Windsor product and UMass grad transfer Zach Lewis (8.4), Stamford’s Shadrac Casimir (8.2) and Hamden’s C.J. Seaforth, a freshman.

Dukes, the Hartford product who transferred to Niagara from USC a couple of years ago, leads the MAAC in scoring at 21.1 per game.

Quinnipiac has a pair — Daniels, who is second on the team in scoring, and Rich Kelly, the Shelton product who has handled starting point guard duties as a freshman with aplomb.

Waterbury’s Malik Petteway is at Robert Morris, Stamford’s Jeremiah Livingston at Saint Peter’s, Farmington’s Obi Momah at Marist and New Haven’s Jalanni White, who was Waters’ teammate last year at Notre Dame-West Haven, is key a freshman off the bench for first-place Canisius.

“In general, it’s a very good mid-major conference that’s gonna recruit regionally,” said Grasso. “So, it makes sense there would be Connecticut kids in the league.”

Besides Waters and White, other New Haven products are making their marks. Raiquan Clark, a junior, is averaging 17.4 points per game at Long Island University. And Walter Whyte is scoring 7.9 per game as a frosh at Boston University.

Pemberton, of Middletown, is averaging 15.2 per game at Hofstra. Vann, of Bridgeport, scores at a 10.6 clip at VCU. Coppin State, of all places, has two Connecticut players (Hartford’s Keandre Fair and Wethersfield’s Jordan Hardwick) and an assistant coach (Wallingford’s Phil Gaetano). Waterbury’s Tyrn Flowers is with Clark at LIU, sitting out after transferring from UMass. Wethersfield’s Mark Carbone is sitting out at New Hampshire after transferring from San Diego. Hartford’s Jaecee Martin is at Sacred Heart, Trumbull’s Thomas Nolan at Farfield.

The list goes on and on, with no signs of stopping.

“I hope more guys continue to keep on going to college to play basketball and living out their dreams,” said Daniels, “keep playing well and keep making a name for Connecticut basketball.”

Girls basketball: Amity sweeps season series from Hillhouse

NEW HAVEN – Michelle Shoop and her Amity girls basketball team are looking for some consistency. Hovering around the .500 mark, the Spartans are ready to break through.

Monday evening in New Haven may be that moment. Rallying from a three-point deficit with under three minutes to play, Amity defeated Hillhouse 55-50 in a Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision contest at Hillhouse High.

“This is a big win for us,” Shoop said. “The SCC is so tough. You really have to battle. We were down, but we were able to battle back. I am really happy with the way we executed at the end.”

Trailing 47-44 after Hillhouse went on a 4-0 run on baskets by Tanayja London and Tyree Allen Chappell, Amity scored the next five points to take the lead for good. Tara Laugeni started the run with a basket and free throw to even the game at 47, and Jenna Van Hise put Amity on top by two points with a bucket with 1:16 remaining.

Hillhouse came right back to take its last lead of the night on a 3-pointer by Kiana Brown with 53 seconds remaining, but Amity closed the game with the final six points, including four from the free throw line.

“We can’t be inconsistent,” Hillhouse coach Catrina Hawley-Stewart said. “We have a great quarter or great defense, then we break down. We are better than that. We play seven kids and they all know what to do. They are all great kids. We need to play aggressive.”

Laugeni gave Amity the lead for good with a basket and foul with 39.4 seconds remaining, Jillian Martin increased the lead to 53-50 at the free throw line, and Amanda Granados sealed the win with two more free throws with four seconds to go.

“This is a really big win for us,” Martin said. “We want to go far in the states. We need to have a better record. We want to do well in the SCC’s too. This was an important win for us.”

With the game even at 39 after three quarters of play, Hillhouse held Amity to just a pair of field goals until less than two minutes remained in the game. During that time, the Academics (5-8) twice took different leads, but never expanded on the margin from the free throw line, missing four straight from the free throw line with a three-point lead and less than three minutes to go in the game.

“Free throws,” Hawley-Stewart said after her team connected on just 5-of-17 free throws in the game. “We missed layups and got second chances at the free throw line, but could not make them. We lost by five, but it was not a five-point game. We make those free throws, and it’s a one possession game.”

Amity (7-6) looked as if it had the game going its way early, taking a nine-point lead on a bucket by Martin with one minute to go in the first half. The Academics quickly made a game of it, using a 3-pointer and a basket by Allen Chappell in the final 45seconds to get the Academics within 24-20 at the half.

Hillhouse took a 28-27 lead two minutes into the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Brown, but four straight points by Laugeni had Amity on top 31-28. Martin’s 3-pointer put Amity on top 34-31, but Hillhouse’s London connected with 25 seconds left in the third quarter to even the game at 39.

“They are a good team,” Shoop said of Hillhouse. “(Allen Chappell and London) are great players. They are tough to defend. They pose a lot of threats. We knew we had to execute tonight.”

Laugeni led Amity with 16 points, Martin added 15 and Van Hise scored 10. Allen Chappell led Hillhouse with 13 points, while Brown and London each scored 10 in the loss for the Academics.

Hockey: Team chemistry, team effort has Sheehan 7-2; No. 1 Fairfield Prep last remaining unbeaten

$

Sheehan coach Dave Festa, in his 10th season coaching the Titans, is enjoying his best start at 7-2 and one of the big reasons is team chemistry with seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen all contributing.

“As we were going through preseason practices, I could see the potential in this team,” Festa said. “Due to the youth on our team, we had eight freshmen join us this year, I was interested to see how they could adjust to the speed and the pressure of the high school game. We have had some games where we have had to come from behind and have seen production from across all of our classes, from seniors to freshmen.”

Festa said this is the biggest roster the team has had in years because the Titans can only draw from half a town that the team shares with Lyman Hall. There are 21 players listed on the roster submitted on the CIAC website for this season.

“With the depth brings options for different line combinations and special teams,” Festa said. “Our offense has been spread across the offensive lines, and our defense has stepped into the play and contributed very consistently.

“We also have been getting scoring from different areas of the rink with three different lines scoring and scoring from our defense.”

Three of the top five scorers for the Titans are underclassmen with freshmen Joey Romano (11 goals, nine assists) and Anthony Romano (five goals, nine assists) and sophomore Dayton Allderige (three goals, seven assists). Offensive-minded defensemen are seniors Nick Gonsalves (five goals, five assists) and Alex Ficorilli (five goals, three assists).

“We have our entire team on the positive side for our plus/minus (44 goals scored, 23 allowed),” Festa said. “We have an impressive 55 percent faceoff win-percentage and our lowest PIM hovering around 7 minutes per game, which is 4 minutes lower per game than last year.

“It is a total team effort on defense that has also contributed to our success so far.”

Sheehan goalie Tyler Robertson has also made a big impact in his third season between the pipes.

“Tyler has a .887 save-percentage,” Festa said. “His maturity and confidence in net has translated well to the team, his high hockey IQ is respected by the players. While this is a good start, we have some very strong teams on our schedule that will be a great test.

“The recent loss to Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug (Jan. 13) in overtime (3-2 loss) made us a stronger team. We were able to understand our weaknesses and focus on them in practice and film studies. Having 60 percent of the season remaining, we are looking to stay healthy and continue to get stronger on and off the puck.”

And then there was one

At the half-way mark of the regular season, top-ranked Fairfield Prep is the last boys hockey team in Division I, II and III combined to be unbeaten (10-0).

In an earlier interview, Fairfield Prep coach Matt Sather credits experience, depth and team chemistry for the Jesuits’ success.

The Jesuits, who have been ranked No. 1 in the Register/GameTimeCT Hockey Top 10 poll every week so far this season, have outscored opponents 46-12. They certainly served notice to Connecticut competition during the recent holiday school break that they would be a force to reckon with moving forward.

Fairfield Prep defeated some of the top teams in the Northeast region in the Mount St. Charles Holiday tournament in Rhode Island. Fairfield Prep had a 3-2 win over Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) in the first round, Prep defeated St. Joseph Collegiate (New York) 2-0 in the semifinals and defeated Franklin (Massachusetts) 3-2 in double overtime in the championship game.

The Jesuits boast balanced scoring led by eight players with eight points or more. Among the leaders are Colin Bella (seven goals, three assists), Skyler Celotto (six goals, four assists), Joe Mancini (six goals, four assists), Ryan Eckert (four goals, nine assists) and Kevin Oricoli (three goals, nine assists).

Prep has two shutouts with the defense led by goalies Jack McGee and Jake Walker. McGee is 8-0 with a 1.31 goals-against average and 0.947 save-percentage. Walker is 2-0 with a 0.50 goals-against average and 0.977 save-percentage. Cole Casl is among the talented defensemen on the team.

#Tweet-Your-Buzzer-Beaters: Palmieri’s floater in second OT lifts St. Paul over Derby

St. Paul’s boys basketball team has certainly done a 180 since the calendar flipped to 2018.

Once mired in a four-game losing streak, the Falcons have blasted off in January. They won four straight to get back to .500 and then nearly toppled NVL power Holy Cross 55-49 last Friday.

The excruciating setback might have sent the Falcons reeling. But they received a needed pick-me-up in the closing seconds of a second overtime battle with Derby on Tuesday night.

After setting up the o Senior guard Mike Palmieri hit a floater in the lane as time expired on a 90-89 victory.

St. Paul did an admirable job getting the footage to us not long after the game:

St. Paul improved to 6-5. Derby, meanwhile, lost its second overtime game in a week, an 81-75 setback vs. Seymour the previous Tuesday. The Red Raiders fell to 4-6.

Hockey: No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven shuts out No. 8 Notre Dame-Fairfield

WEST HAVEN — For the second straight game the Notre Dame-West Haven boys hockey team played a complete, dominating game and this time it was against SCC/SWC Division I rival Notre Dame-Fairfield.

And it’s a good thing since the Green Knights faced a hot goalie for the Lancers.

Despite 31 saves from Lancers goalie Kacy Adams, Mike Bencivengo scored twice and Brendan Crowley had 19 saves to lead No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven to a 5-0 win over No. 8 Notre Dame-Fairfield at Bennett Rink on Wednesday.

The Green Knights were coming off a 5-1 win over Hamden on Saturday. Prior to the Hamden game the Green Knights had gone 1-3 in their previous four starts.

The Latest GameTimeCT Top 10 Hockey Poll

“We wanted to play a lot of the game in their zone today,” Notre Dame-West Haven coach Tim Belcher said. “We did that and we finished some drives. They weren’t playing a lot of players so we used our speed and depth to take advantage of that in the game.

“Even during that stretch of games when we went 1-3 I thought we were playing well. But lately we’ve been playing great. Hopefully we’ll build on this and improve even more moving forward.”

The Green Knights (7-4) dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Lancers 10-3. Adams did his best to keep his team in the game with nine saves but one shot got by him late in the period.

Zack Dumas scored a power-play goal off a shot from the left circle to give the Green Knights a 1-0 lead with 1:18 to go in the first period.

The second period was similar to the first with the Green Knights dominating and outshooting the Lancers 12-7. But Adams kept the Lancers in the game with 11 saves and allowed only one goal.

Defenseman Kevin Millea’s rising slap shot from inside the left circle flew inside the left post to give the Green Knights a 2-0 lead with 1:01 left in the second period.

The Lancers (6-4) had one of their best chances to score in the game when Austin Allen had an open shot about eight feet in front of the net. Crowley made a stick save to keep his shutout in tact.

Michael Ansaldo wasted no time padding the Green Knights’ lead at 3-0 exactly 2 minutes into the third period. Bencivengo finished the Green Knights scoring with a pair of power-play goals at 4:40 and at 11:12 for the 5-0 final.

“This was a team effort by everyone today,” Bencivengo said. “We were winning the puck battles and our offense scored some big goals. My teammates really were the reason I scored two goals, giving me great passes and allowing me to get in position to score. We also played solid on defense too.

“We have been improving and we’re building confidence off each of these past two wins. After each game the key is to focus on the next game, one game at a time. It’s similar to tonight when their goalie was making so many saves. We weren’t frustrated by that because goalies are always going to make saves. What you do is after the goalie makes a save you keep working to get that next shot and then the next shot to keep producing chances to score.”

Overall the Green Knights ended up outshooting the Lancers 36-19.
