Looking back at the past season for the Westbrook field hockey team, senior forward Alexa Mulvihill still can’t believe the success the Knights had from the first preseason practice to the final second that ticked off the clock in the CIAC Class S championship game.

“It still hasn’t quite sunk in yet, it’s still such a surreal feeling,” Mulvihill said.

In 2015, it was a rebuilding year for the Knights who ended up 4-11-0-1 and didn’t qualify for the Class S tournament. But Westbrook coach Janet Dickey played a lot of girls, developed a lot of players and at the end of the season, believed all the experienced players returning would make an impact in 2016.

Dickey was right.

The Knights defeated Valley Regional 1-0 in the Shoreline Conference tournament championship game. In the Class S championship game, Westbrook tied Shoreline Conference rival Haddam-Killingworth 1-1 in double overtime to come away as CIass S co-champions.

The Knights finished the special season 19-1-2 and one of the many key players in the middle of all that fun and excitement was Mulvihill.

The 2016 New Haven Register All-Area Field Hockey Team

Mulvihill ended the season with a school record 33 goals and added 18 assists. Her ball-handling skills and knack of knowing when to pass or shoot allowed her to finished her career with a school record 60 goals and 58 assists. The two highlights of the season for Mulvihill were scoring the lone goal off a low reverse chip shot in the victory over Valley Regional in the Shoreline Conference final and scoring Westbrook’s goal in the 1-1 tie with HK in the Class S final.

For her effort, Mulvihill has been selected the Register All-Area field hockey MVP.

“Throughout my high school career it was always my goal to have a season like this,” Mulvihill said. “From the first day of preseason practice we were all willing to work hard to get there. Our school is small with about 250 students and our entire team was small with only 19 players.

“Every girl worked hard. A huge reason our team was able to connect so well on the field was because of how much we enjoy and love one another off the field.

We are like sisters. Our entire team was so close in and out of season.”

Mulvihill credits the coaching staff for her development as a player.

“Our success shows how amazing our coaching staff has been,” Mulvihill said. “As a freshman I wasn’t nearly as good a goal scorer as I was this season. The coaches molded me into a good player, it’s amazing what they do.”

Being the team’s prolific goal scorer came natural for Mulvihill but it was also a team effort.

“I don’t think about scoring, it just happens,” Mulvihill said. “It comes naturally. It all comes down to what is most important and that is to do anything I can to make my team better. It also comes down to my teammates and their distribution skills to get me the ball and their ability to score whenever I can get them the ball.

“Last year I had five goals. I never thought about setting a scoring record this season, I didn’t know what the goal record was at the school. It’s just another thing that was great about this season.”

Mulvihill has also been named the Shoreline Conference Player of the Year and Connecticut High School Coaches Association Class S Player of the Year.

“Her success has never been about her personal notoriety,” Dickey said. “She has always been a team player. Her success, which ultimately contributed to our overall success, was her uncanny ability to know when to shoot, when to pass or when to hold the ball.”

Mulvihill hasn’t made a decision on college and would like to play field hockey at that level.

“I am beyond fortunate that I have been able to play with some of my best friends,” Mulvihill said. “It’s going to be hard to part with the young ones but I cannot wait to come back and watch all of the underclassmen carry on all of our Westbrook field hockey traditions.”

QUOTABLE

“We’re not big, we don’t have this guy or that guy who can make a difference. We have to share the ball. We have five guys who must play together. If they don’t, we’ll be in trouble.”
Windsor coach Ken Smith said following a 102-98 loss to Weaver in the second annual Robert Saulsbury Invitational on Dec. 27.

GET OUT AND GO

• Waterford at Ledyard, Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Ledyard is coming off winning the Artie Kohs tournament at Xavier last week while Waterford is undefeated.

• Wilbur Cross at Fairfield Prep, Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Fairfield Prep came up with a big home win against Hamden last Friday. Can the Jesuits do it again against the Governors?

• Sacred Heart at Holy Cross, Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Crusaders host the two-time defending NVL champions.

• Hillhouse vs. Wilbur Cross, Thursday, 7 p.m.: Governors have a brutal week, but that’s life in the Southern Connecticut Conference this season.

• Notre Dame-West Haven at Hamden, Friday, 7 p.m.: Division I players Tremont Waters (Georgetown) vs. C.J. Seaforth (Iona). That matchup alone may draw a sellout.

In his first eight seasons as Shelton’s head boys’ basketball coach, Brian Gardiner has never entered the new calendar year undefeated.

Don’t look now, but the Gaels are 4-0, winning a pair of overtime games against Cheshire (double overtime) and Berlin.

“We were so inexperienced coming in,” Gardiner said. “(Jeff) Stockmal is the only (one back) who started varsity last year. I didn’t know how they would respond, but they’ve been very resilient. They don’t give up, they don’t panic. They’ve made good things happen, which has built up their confidence.”

Gardiner said Shelton was down 12 to Cheshire with 3:15 left, but eventually got the game into overtime thanks to two free throws from David Wells with 3 seconds left in regulation.

Then Stockmal, who averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four assists per game last season, made a foul shot with 3 seconds left to win in double overtime, 71-70.

“We had no business winning the Cheshire game,” Gardiner said. ‘Then we started to chip away.”

TOP PERFORMANCES THUS FAR

By contrast, Shelton led Berlin by double digits at halftime. The Redcoats came from behind and took the lead and still had it with a minute to go. This time, Stockmal’s two free throws with 6 seconds left was the difference in a 76-75 win.

Stockmal, David Berritto and Ryan Murphy are Shelton’s captains. Wells, fellow senior Armando Martinez, junior Matt Hunyadi and sophomore Brian Berritto will be in the Gaels’ rotation in their new division, the SCC Oronoque.

Amity joins Shelton to keep at least one SCC Housatonic Division rival going. Notre Dame-West Haven, Wilbur Cross and East Haven comprise the rest of the new division.

“I didn’t like it (the changes) because I liked the Housy,” Gardiner said. “I liked that every year, multiple teams could win. It was very competitive. I didn’t like losing the Housy but schedule-wise, it’s pretty much the same, some equal games, ones where teams that play the hardest and the smartest wins. When we play the heavy-hitters, we will see what we are really made of.”

The Gaels get their first go-around with Cross (Monday) and Notre Dame (Jan. 11) next week.

“We don’t want to be just a team that makes the tournament,” Gardiner said. “We need to play really hard and play together. That’s important.”

Boys basketball notebook: Fairfield Warde climbs into Top 10 for first time

logo_FairfieldWardeBeing the top team in Fairfield gives you plenty of notice, especially when it gets your team into the top 10 for the first time.

Fairfield Warde check in at No. 8 this week, the first time Warde has been in the top 10 since old Fairfield High split back into Warde and Ludlowe. Beating two preseason top 10 teams, Fairfield Prep and Notre Dame-Fairfield, puts you in the spotlight pretty quickly.

“Beating such quality programs gave my guys confidence,” Warde coach Ryan Swaller said. “We know we have a good team. … We have to try to keep level-headed going into the FCIAC.”

Warde was considered one of the favorites in the FCIAC this season. A showdown with ninth-ranked Danbury doesn’t happen until Jan. 27.

But plenty of league competition awaits for an experienced team.

“Everyone in our league was watching (last) Monday night (against Notre Dame-Fairfield),” Swaller said. “There are six different guys who could put up 20 points a night. It’s a nice luxury to have, but teams have to buy into it.”

SHELTON OFF TO QUICK START

Junior Sean Conway scored 52 points in the Fairfield Prep Holiday Classic to earn tournament MVP honors. The Brancato brothers, senior Giacomo and junior Antonio, along with Marcel Parsons, any one of them could be the go-to guy on a given night for Warde.

“I’ve had years where it was tough getting one guy to average 15-20 points,” Swaller said. “Giacomo guarded (Fairfield Prep forward Pat) Harding. His strength is he is able to go against taller guys and physically force them off the post.”

Swaller, like Shelton’s Gardiner, is in year nine with his team. He has been around long enough as both a player (former walk-on at UConn) and coach to know how important team defense will be to achieve the goal of winning an FCIAC championship.

“As this tournament showed, we were cold (shooting) in the first two halves of the games, but defensively we were able to hold both teams in check. It felt like we should have been down 10 or 15,” Swaller said. “Our defense still needs a lot of improvement. We need to be able to put pressure on the opponent. We can’t take plays off. We need to stop other teams that have a little more size than us and be able to control the game when shots aren’t falling.”

Boys basketball notebook: Trinity Catholic coach Mike Walsh goes for win No. 600 Tuesday

Trinity Catholic coach Mike Walsh is now just one victory away from becoming the fifth coach in state history to win 600 games.

Walsh, who has won six state championships and has been in the finals six other times with the Crusaders, goes for the milestone tonight at St. Joseph. In a bit of irony, there’s the chance the state’s all-time wins leader will be in the building.

Vito Montelli, who has 878 career wins, coached St. Joseph for 50 years before retiring in the summer of 2012.

If Walsh doesn’t get it Tuesday, Trinity Catholic plays at Ridgefield on Friday.

Boys Basketball: Torrington breaks into the win column against Wolcott

$
0
0

TORRINGTON >> Torrington boys basketball broke through for a 71-59 win against Wolcott in a battle of NVL teams looking for their first win Tuesday evening at Torrington High School.

Each team has faced some of the league’s best, with Wolcott (0-4) suffering through an opening loss to Sacred Heart and Torrington (1-3) meeting the same fate against Crosby.

On Tuesday, Jordan Henneberry (18 points), Stephon Dailey (16) and Tyreek Davis (13) led the Red Raiders against Eagle leaders Pat Drewry (16 points), Bobby White (15) and Mike Tassarzic (10).

But the real hero was Torrington Coach Eric Gamari’s platoon system in a break-neck game in which both sides often seemed out of control.

“I have to play nine guys,” said Gamari. “It’s just the way we’re built this year.”

On Tuesday, it was 10 as a whole new five rushed onto the floor time after time to lead another Red Raider charge.

The system had two major virtues. In a first half in which both teams showed how far they have to go to meet the league’s upper echelon, the Eagles led most of the way on fewer mistakes.

But by the half, the steady wave of fresh Torrington legs started to take its toll on the Eagles.

In the second half, both teams – especially Torrington – showed why they might reach the heights after all.

“We’re working on getting better,” said Wolcott Coach Matt Craig. “Torrington is a tough team.”

The Eagles clung to a 23-22 lead at the half, but Torrington charged out of the locker room in an 11-2 burst of energy highlighted by a steal and coast-to-coast basket by Henneberry and Dailey’s third three-pointer of the game.

It’s the other virtue of a Torrington team in which Gamari has 10 relatively equal players to choose from – mixing and matching as the highs and lows came for almost each of them.

“I had no idea who I was going to play in the final quarter,” he grinned. “I just went with the feel.”

Wolcott was back with its own run highlighted by six points from Pat Drewry and a three from White with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

Torrington led 42-40. Fresh legs earned the Raiders the last six points of the quarter, including a steal and buzzer-beating layup by Davis.

The legs pulled Torrington’s lead away for good in the final period, with more spring on the boards and more control of the fouls.

When Davis put away a fresh-as-a-daisy dunk in the game’s final seconds, the story was told.
