#Tweet-Your-Buzzer-Beaters: Rocky Hill’s Monaco’s inbounds bucket bests Maloney

Rocky Hill is off to a great start this season and few victories get as sweet as the way their 54-53 home win over Maloney went down Tuesday night.

Down 2 and just one chance at an inbounds play with 1.7 seconds left, Rocky Hill found D.J. Monaco in a perfect spot beneath the basket for the winning basket at the buzzer.

Watch the footage, posted by Coach Josh Dinerman above.

Alex Sikorski finished with 26 points and Rocky Hill improved to 5-1, which is its best start since joining the CCC.

#Tweet-Your-Buzzer-Beaters: East Lyme’s Gandenberger gets the bounce to beat Montville

This is easily the best #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters of the young season.

East Lyme was tied with Montville and had time to work for one last shot in overtime of an ECC battle at home Tuesday night.

The Vikings might have drawn up the play, but it must have felt like eternity for its result to bear fruit in the form of a victory.

Off an inbounds play just over midcourt, the ball found its way to sophomore guard Luke Leonard on the right wing. He shook off a defender and drove inside where he was met with a large Montville defender.

Fortunately, junior J.D. Gandenberger found himself all alone behind the 3-point line as the Montville players collapsed back to the basket to defend Leonard. It was almost too easy for the kick out pass.

Gandenberger got the ball and launched an uncontested shot that was just short.

But Gandenberger got a sweet bounce off the front of the rim. As the buzzer sounded, the ball floated for a second and fell through for the 57-54 victory and a wild celebration from the home crowd.

Watch the fantastic video posted by East Lyme coach Jeff Bernardi.

East Lyme improved to 4-1 heading into a non-conference game vs. Creed on Thursday. As for Montville, it was a tough way to follow up its first victory of the year (61-48 over Griswold). The Indians fell to 1-5.

#Tweet-Your-Buzzer-Beaters: Old Lyme’s Palenski sends game to OT, but North Branford pulls away

Old Lyme’s Dean Palenski looks to the stands for congratulations after sending his team’s game to OT with a buzzer-beating 3. North Branford, however, went on to win (Screen shot via Shoreline Insider on Twitter)

Coming off a loss to East Hampton to end 2016, North Branford was in good shape, up 61-58 with mere seconds remaining in its Shoreline Conference game vs. Old Lyme at home.

Old Lyme’s Dean Palenski made sure the T-Birds had to work overtime to earn their fourth victory of the season.

Old Lyme only had time for an inbound-and-shoot play for the potential game-tying 3-pointer. And with Parker Stone — who had hit four 3-pointers — drawing a double team at the top of the key, Palenski manage to slip away and found himself in great position on the left wing.

The senior caught the short inbounds, turned and launched a beauty that swished through the net as the buzzer sounded on a 61-61 tie at the end of regulation.

Watch the footage from @ShorelineBball on Twitter, who had courtside seats for Palenski’s clutch shot and captured the reaction beautifully (and in landscape mode! Nicely done).

But in the end, there were no worries for North Branford. The T-Birds defense held Old Lyme to a mere two points in overtime and pulled away for a 75-63 victory.

As a side benefit, the overtime allowed North Branford junior Brett Lequire was able to go over 1,000 points for his career a game earlier. He hit the mark on a foul shot and finished with 38 points.

Old Lyme fell to 1-4 with its third-consecutive loss.

Boys basketball: Middletown routs Plainville

MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown boys basketball coach Rick Privott said he thinks his team is beginning to round into shape.

“I think we’re getting there,” Privott said, following his team’s 72-26 romp over Plainville in a Central Connecticut Conference South Division game at the LaBella-Sullivan Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

“Tyshaun [James] is maybe coming along a little more slowly from the football injuries, but he’ll be fine,” Privott added. “Markevious [Snead] is much more confident this year and is therefore much improved. Last year he was a little reluctant to take a jump shot, but we’ve been talking with him and I told him he has a good one. He’s confident and he’s knocking it down.”

Middletown (3-2) got 13 points from Snead and six from James and was led by Ahmod Prvott’s 18. Ten players scored for the Blue Dragons. While Privott substituted throughout, he also saw to it his starters got considerable playing time.

Both James and Snead missed time in the early this season because of injuries.

“It’s important for our kids to get playing time as they have been together for just two games,” Privott said. “In a game like this, it was also important for us not to fall into bad habits and to do the basic, fundamental things like moving our feet on defense, boxing out and just playing good defense. We did all of those things tonight.”

Middletown, which sank 10 three-point shots, raced to a 20-4 first quarter lead. Privott opened the game with a trey, added a hoop, and Snead had three baskets as MHS took an 11-0 lead before Plainville got on the board with four minutes left in the first quarter.

The Dragons poured it on in the second and a Privott trey just before the horn gave Middletown a 35-9 lead at the break Privott had 13 and Snead had nine in the first half.

Pierre Ramirez’ hoop enabled the Blue Devils to break into double figures with 5:36 to go in the third and Middletown led 59-15 after three. MHS’ starters didn’t play in the fourth quarter.

Middletown was 29-for-46 from the field for 63 percent. Only from the foul line were the Dragons unsuccessful, making just 4-of-11.

DeAaron Lawrence had nine points, Daquan Singletary had seven and Jordan Council had six for Middletown.

Jarrad Demmon had six for Plainville (0-6) which had just nine field goals.

Aveon Woods led MHS with five assists and Snead led with six rebounds.

Middletown is at Bristol Eastern Thursday for another CCC South game.

CLINTON >> Morgan girls basketball coach Caitlin Woods did everything she could to try and slow down East Hampton senior Gyanna Russell. Woods even resorted to a rare box-and-one defense.

But Russell made sure this was going to be a special night.

“She’s great,” Woods said. “She’s the best all-around player we’ve seen this year.”

Russell poured in a game-high 30 points to lead the Bellringers to a 51-44 Shoreline Conference victory Tuesday night in Clinton.

Russell was at her best down the stretch for the undefeated Bellringers, who were clinging to a two-point lead with a little less than four minutes left in regulation.

But it was early in the third quarter when Russell made East Hampton basketball history. Russell joined the Bellringers prestigious 1000 point club with a pair of free throws early in the third quarter. The game stopped and Russell was mobbed by her teammates while the East Hampton faithful who made the trip to Clinton gave her a resounding standing ovation.

“It was a wonderful night for Gyanna,” East Hampton coach Shaun Russell said. “No relation but she’s like a daughter to me. She’s had a great year all year. The way she’s been playing and scoring I thought tonight was a possibility. I’m so happy for her. I’m sure (scoring her 1000th point) was weighing on her a little bit.”

Russell needed 15 points to become the 14th player in Bellringers history to reach the 1000 point milestone. After scoring 13 points in the first half to give East Hampton a slim 24-23 lead at the break, Russell swished a pair of free throws to give East Hampton a 26-23 lead with 6:08 to go in the third.

Highlights of East Hampton's 61-44 girls basketball victory over Morgan via Sportzedge.com

“It was nice,” Gyanna Russell said. “It was a relief, I guess too. It’s all fun.”

Russell seemed to relax after that and began to dazzle the crowd with her entire repertoire. She drained a buzzer-beating three pointer to give East Hampton a 36-31 cushion after three quarters.

“I think I started playing the way I usually play,” Russell said.
Morgan, however, kept things close behind Sydney Chomicz (18 points) and Shannon Maher (10 points).

Leading 39-37 with 3:41 left, Russell came up with a huge putback then was fouled on a terrific drive. She made both free throws for a 43-37 lead.

“She’s been doing a great job on the boards,” Shaun Russell said. “She’s also been doing a great job sharing the ball. She’s making her free throws and letting the game come to her. Tremendous job by her tonight.”

Russell, who made 13 of 15 free throws, sealed things with another driving layup and a nifty scoop shot in the lane to stretch East Hampton’s lead to 49-42 with 42 seconds remaining.

Jenna DeMartino buried five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points for East Hampton (7-0).

“We lost so many seniors I don’t think a lot of teams thought we were going to be this good,” Gyanna Russell said. “I’m really happy with the way the underclassmen have stepped up.”

Russell joins Kenneth Lutton (1954), Richard Hallberg (1971), Eugene Rossi (1974), Holly Brown (1979), Lisa Abbott (1991), Brian Dominksi (1991), Brian Krepcio (1997), Holly Neiweem (1998), Tracy Wolf (2002), Allyson Smith (2004), Brooke Pitcher (2008), Kelsey Booth (2011), and Matt Vasquenza (2014) in East Hampton’s 1000 point club.

Lutton is the all-time leading scorer with 1,536 points, while Smith is the top girls’ scorer with 1,444.

Trinity Catholic coach Mike Walsh won his 600th game Tuesday night as the Crusaders won at St. Joseph, 79-51.

Walsh, 69, becomes the fifth coach in  CIAC history to accomplish the feat. Before Tuesday’s win, he met with former longtime St. Joseph coach Vito Montelli, the all-time leader with 878 wins.

“He’s one of my closeswt friends in the basketball community,” said Walsh, who is in his 38th season as head coach at Trinity Catholic. “He kidded with me, ‘Don’t get your 600th on Vito Montelli Court (at St. Joseph). I said, ‘Vito, I hate to do this to you but I have my entire famioly here.”

In addition, former UConn guard and New Haven Register All-State selection Craig Austrie was among those making the trip to Trumbull to see Walsh get the win.

“It’s really a tribute to all the great players I’ve been blessed to have over the years. I appreciate all of them,” said Walsh, who has six state championships to his credit.

The Crusaders are 4-0

We’ll have a little more on the milestone in next week’s boys basketball notes.

Below is a list of verbal college commitments from the Connecticut high school and prep school Class of 2017.

This is a living list, which means it’s preliminary, not comprehensive and will be updated constantly even beyond National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017.

The preliminary list has been compiled by the staff at GameTimeCT through various sources, including Scout.com, 247sports.com and Rivals.com and Connecticut media reports. Most of the major prospects are here, including others we know have offers. Over time, it will evolve into a complete listing of the many college choices for Connecticut football players.

(We won’t be listing offers here, by the way, just verbal commitments and signings)

You can view the Class of 2016 signing list here.

LIST UPDATED THROUGH JAN 4, 2017.

#Tweet-Your-Buzzer-Beaters: Westbrook’s Savannah Marshall drains halfcourt bomb in OT win

Tuesday night was busy with winning buzzer beaters on the boys side, but here was a great one from the girls, as well.

With time running down in the first half, Westbrook’s Savannah Marshall — who was on fire all night — launched this bomb from beyond half court to put her team up 28-20 over Coginchaug at halftime.

Coginchaug rallied in the second half and forced overtime, however, but the Knights pulled away in the extra session for a 58-51 overtime victory.

For her part, Marshall finished with 27 points.

Hockey: Fairfield topples North Branford in state final rematch

NORTHFORD – If the North Branford hockey team had thoughts of defeating Fairfield Co-Op in a rematch of last season’s CIAC Division II final, the formula was pretty simple: Stay out of the penalty box.

Unfortunately for the Thunderbirds, the formula to success was not followed as North Branford allowed three power play goals by the Mustangs in the middle period, allowing Fairfield to take home the rematch, 7-3, Wednesday at the Northford Ice Pavilion. The Mustangs also won the title game last season in overtime.

“What made the difference was we had three lines who all contributed,” Fairfield coach Carl Larouche said. “We were able to roll three lines out there the entire game . They all did a good job. The power play was the key.”

The Mustangs (4-1) opened the second period with a two-man advantage which carried over from the first period and broke a 1-1 tie when Will Von Brauchitsch poked in a loose puck in front with eight seconds left in the man advantage for a 2-1 lead.

After Mustangs’ goalie Dawson Gunn robbed Marc Daddio and the rebound by Brian McKee with 9:54 left in the middle period, Fairfield extended its lead to 3-1 with another power play goal. This time, the Mustangs needed just ten seconds of the man advantage as Anthony Beccaria scored his second of three goals in the game when he put in a rebound past North Branford goalie John Lovelace.

“We have to be more disciplined,” North Branford coach Ralph Shaw said. “Obviously, their power play was working tonight. We have to work on our penalty kill.”

The Thunderbirds were able to get some life when Brendan Dupuis fed Sean McKee at center ice. Sean McKee skated just inside the blue line and snapped a shot on goal which was stopped by the blocker of Gunn, but went in the air, over the head of the goaltender, and into the net to get North Branford within 3-2 with 5:48 left in the middle period.

“That has been the story of our season,” Shaw said. “We have been very inconsistent. We play one shift well, then we take a shift off. We are focusing on one shift at a time.”

That life was stolen from North Branford as another penalty put the Mustangs back on the power play with less than five minutes to go in the middle period. North Branford looked as if it would kill the penalty, but Arel Ram picked up a loose puck which went off the post and tucked it past Lovelace with five seconds left in the power play for a 4-2 Fairfield lead with 2:46 left in the period.

“We tell the boys to keep doing the system,” Larouche said. “There is no panic. When we are in a fast-paced game, there is no panic. I am very pleased with the team.”

The Thunderbirds again got within striking distance to start the third period when Brian McKee scored on the power play from the slot off assists from Sean McKee and Dupuis 1:51 in, but the Mustangs answered with three goals in a span of 3:11 to put the contest away.

Beccaria completed his hat trick with a goal in front with 8:58 remaining, Von Brauchitsch scored his second of the game 1:51 later, and Garath Gacetta needed 1:20 to extend the margin to four goals.

“It starts in practice,” Beccaria said. “It is a team effort. We had eyes looking all over the ice. We wanted to crash the net and take advantage of pucks in frront of the net.”

The first period was controlled early by the Mustangs, but ended with both teams scoring once. Two North Branford penalties in the final minute of the opening period put Fairfield on a two-man advantage to start the second period.

The Mustangs put on the early pressure in the game with Lovelace denying Keegan O’Reilly from the right faceoff circle 1:39 in, and Kyle Mazza from the left side a short time later. In between, Fairfield took a 1-0 lead when Beccaria scored off a scramble in front with 4:11 gone by in the game.

The Thunderbirds finally got a quality shot on goal with 7:25 left in the opning period as senior Scott Clinton wheeled around in front and ripped a one-timer which was turned aside by Gunn with a nice pad save.

North Branford evened the game on the power play with 4:18 left in the opening period as Daddio fed Sean McKee on the side of the net and McKee perfectly placed a shot between Gunn and the right post for the equalizer.

Beccaria finished with three goals and an assist, while Von Brauchitsch had two goals for the Mustangs. Gunn finished with 10 saves in the win.

SOUTH WINDSOR >> Two years ago, in Jim Dargati’s first year as head coach, the South Windsor boys basketball team won some exciting games and made a run in the Class LL state tournament.

That team was the definition of under-the-radar.

But no longer.

After a 61-52 win over previously unbeaten Hartford Public at home in the Hugh Greer/Charlie Sharos Gymnasium on Wednesday, South Windsor is 5-0 and officially on-the-radar of the rest of the Central Connecticut Conference.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been undefeated,” South Windsor guard Kewan Smoot said.

Smoot, who tweaked his ankle before halftime, finished with a game-high 24 points — 22 in the second half — and Shane Young added 19 for the Bobcats.

Jovely Diaz led Hartford Public with 17, including three 3-pointers.

Both teams started very slow, combining for 13 points in the first quarter, but in the second Hartford Public settled down and took a 13-9 lead after Diaz’s first 3-pointer.

The Owls built a six point advantage until a Sam Baum 3 sparked a 9-0 quarter-ending run for the Bobcats as they took a 20-17 lead at the break.

“We got out on the shooters [on defense],” Smoot said. “They gave it to the bigs, we rebound and go.”

Then, on a bum ankle and all, Smoot began attacking the basket with authority as the second half started..

“I just played through it,” Smoot said. “I tried not to think about it. My team needed me.”

He dropped in nine points in the third and then 12 in the fourth while the Owls tried to mount a comeback.

“They have an all-state player,” Hartford Public coach Curt Reis said. “You can’t win a game and have him be the best player. You’re not going to win a game when the best player has that type of half.”

With 3:54 left in the game, Smoot brought the ball up the floor and from midcourt saw a wide open lane. He picked up speed, drove to the basket and scored to give the Bobcats a 10 point lead.

Jaquan King hit a 3 for Hartford Public with 36 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to five, but time ran out and South Windsor made its free throws down the stretch to come away with its fifth win of the year despite giving up the highest opponent point total of the young season.

“The kids do a great job with our match-up zone,” Dargati said. “And rebounding out of it so we can get out and run.”
