QUOTABLE
“We’ve got players out there with their own agendas. If I call a timeout and I give you the blueprint, you have to try and build a house. You can’t go and build condos. Plain and simple stuff. The work ethic is not there and it’s showing because I have players who come out of the game huffing and puffing and I turn around and point, ‘The same kid you were guarding is still out there. He didn’t go out yet.’ The leadership is not there. But I, too can be a better coach. It’s my fault, too.”
Career coach Larry Kelley following the Panthers’ 77-55 loss to Harding Jan. 18.

Boys basketball: Branford’s Jake Sullivan adds to the buzzer-beating heroics

Dave Phillips/GameTimeCT
Jake Sullivan hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give the Hornets the 35-32 win over North Haven on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016.

OK, so Jake Sullivan’s 3-pointer wasn’t nearly as long as Cory Muckle’s was. But the 30-footer in a tie game still had the same end result: a dramatic victory, this one for Branford over North Haven 35-32.

“Absolutely (a desperately-needed win). It was looking another one might get away from us,” Branford coach Jake Palluzzi said.

Palluzzi said he called a pair of timeouts around a free throw by North Haven completing a three-point play to tie the game at 36 with 4.6 seconds left. Throughout his long coaching career, Palluzzi said he normally runs a particular play that takes about 4 seconds to complete end to end with a variety of options.

“We wanted to make sure we got it to Sullivan, our first option and our best 3-point shooter,” Palluzzi said.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES FROM THE PAST WEEK

So Rich Jacobson got the ball to Sullivan, who put up the long attempt from in front of his own bench.

“He has hit them, but not from that deep,” Palluzzi said. “I’m elated we won the game.”

Lucas Niang- New Canaan (Catherine Avalone - New Haven Register)

Lucas Niang- New Canaan
(Catherine Avalone – New Haven Register)

Lucas Niang, New Canaan’s standout 6-foot-7, 310-pound tackle, has committed to play at Texas Christian University. He made the announcement on Twitter Monday.

Niang anchored the left side of New Canaan’s three-time state championship line, which piled up yards and points thanks in part to his enormous presence and skill on the blind side.

He has been the most heavily recruited Connecticut player from the Class of 2016 and had the pick of the litter among NCAA FBS Schools.

Niang, who was named to the CHSCA All-State First Team, the Walter Camp All-Connecticut team and, most recently, to the New Haven Register All-State first team, had narrowed his choices to Miami, Auburn and TCU after taking visits over the last several weeks.

He made his decision public Monday afternoon.

Elsewhere, Greenwich’s Scooter Harrington, a New Haven Register second-team all-state pick who recently played in the Under Armour All-American Game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., switched his commitment from Boston College to Stanford.

Greenwich football made the announcement on social media Sunday night.

Harrington, a 6-foot-6, 242-pound tight end and defensive end, caught 24 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns and made 26 tackles and had four sacks this year. He was a CHSCA Class LL All-State selection.

Harrington was one the first Class of 2016 to make a commitment when he chose Boston College, his father’s alma mater, a year ago.

Here’s the updated list of Class of 2016 Connecticut high school football college commitments

Girls basketball: Former Hillhouse coach Willie Boyd dies at 81

logo_JamesHillhouseFormer longtime Hillhouse girls basketball coach Willie Boyd died on Sunday. He was 81.

Boyd, who would have turned 82 next month, died after a long illness, according to his widow Eleanor. Family and some of his former players were by his bedside when he passed away at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Saint Raphael Campus.

“He was a father figure to me and definitely very supportive, even after he stopped coaching,” said Sabrina Breland, who succeeded Boyd at Hillhouse and won two state championships. “He gave me advice on everything, from basketball, to teaching to parenting.”

Boyd coached the Academics from 1974-96, finishing at 268-134. That included a pair of Class L state titles (1980-81 and 1981-82) and one runner-up finish in 1979-80. He is a former New Haven Tap-Off Club Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Hillhouse High Hall of Fame in 2008.

“He was like daddy to a bunch of girls who grew up in the inner city of New Haven and he encouraged them to go to college,” Eleanor Boyd said. “I do believe if he had not touched their lives, they would not be as successful as they are today.”

The Boyds moved to the area from Danville, Virginia in the late 1960. Willie Boyd first worked at Pratt & Whitney, then became a special education teacher at Hillhouse, where he remained until he retired in 1998.

Boyd, a Hamden resident at the time of his passing, leaves behind two children, Rodney and Regina. Calling hours are Friday at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hamden from 5-8 p.m. The funeral will be held there as well on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Boys basketball: Middletown blitzes Berlin, extends win streak to 10

BERLIN >> Make that 10 wins in a row for the Middletown boys basketball team.

As has been their custom, the Blue Dragons used a big second half to break from a one-point halftime lead to a 17-point lead early in the fourth quarter. They then withstood a barrage of three-pointers to snap Berlin’s eight-game winning streak, 64-53, in a Central Connecticut Conference game at Berlin Monday evening.

“They slowed things down and played the game they wanted — a half-court game — in the first half,” Middletown coach Rick Privott said. “But we didn’t get rattled and played with a little more intensity in the second half.”

He got that right.

Middletown blitzed Berlin with a 24-8 run in the third quarter and the first couple of minutes of the fourth to take a 51-36 lead.

Berlin (8-4) made it interesting as the Redcoats hit four treys over a two minute span to get the lead under 10 late, but Middletown closed the game with eight free throws to improve to 10-2.

“I was concerned coming in because they have the big guy in the middle [Jake McCarthy, 6-10], they are fundamentally sound and have good shooters,” Privott said. “And they have been playing well. But DeAaron [Lawrence, 13 points] hit a couple of big shots for us in the third that helped us to pull away.”

Emmitt Riddick has a big game for Middletown with a game-high 16 points. He drained a trey in the middle of the run as did Ahmod Privott (11 points).

“I thought we handled their bigs well,” Privott said. “We played good defense, but they can shoot threes which enabled them to come back a little bit.”

Spencer Duke (13 points), Evan McKinnen (11) and Kyle Mahoney (11) all were in double figures for the Redcoats.

Mahoney hit two three-pointers, Duke had one and McKinnen had the fourth in Berlin’s last ditch rally that came up short.

Berlin opened the game with a 7-1 lead, but Middletown came back to lead 14-13 after one in a game dominated by fouls. The officials called over 40 fouls and two Berlin players fouled out.

Middletown opened up a six point lead at 19-13 on a trey by Privott and a hoop by Makai Hunter (10 points) to start the second, but Berlin went on a 10-0 run to take a 23-19 lead.

But in the last two minutes of the half, the Dragons hit Berlin with a quick 8-3 run to lead 27-26 at intermission.

Then came the second half.

Middletown will go after win No. 11 Thursday at home with Bristol Central.

WEST HAVEN – Hamden senior Robert McKiernan relishes the role of being the hero. For the second time in less than a handful of games, McKiernan lifted his team to victory.

Putting in a rebound of a Jake Blackwell shot 1 minute, 40 seconds into overtime, McKiernan lifted Hamden to a 6-5 victory over Notre Dame-West Haven Monday evening in a Southern Connecticut Conference game at the Edward L. Bennett Rink..

“It is an awesome feeling,” McKiernan said after his team improved to 4-4-2 with the win. “It is the second time in two weeks. This is a big rivalry between two teams that goes way back. We tied a tough team from (Scarsdale) New York on Friday and that was not where we wanted to be. We came out here today and beat a tough Notre Dame team.”

The Green Dragons are now 3-0-1 in their last four games, with all the wins being decided by one goal.

“The guys dug deep,” Hamden coach Todd Hall said. “It was going to come down to who wanted it more. We came out hard and were able to get the goal in overtime.”

Overtime was needed as Notre Dame, ranked third in the latest GameTimeCT / New Haven Register Top 10 poll, scored twice in the final 8:51 of the third period.

Just 48 seconds after Ike Klesyk gave Hamden a 5-3 advantage, Joe Ansaldo scored off an assist from Matt Ciaburro to cut the deficit to one goal. The Green Knights had 15 shots in the third period and finally got the equalizer past Hamden’s sophomore goaltender Steven Turner with 3:07 remaining as Ciaburro spun around in front and scored his second of the game off an assist from Christian Maselli.

“I was proud of the way we came back,” Notre Dame coach Tim Belcher said after his team fell to 7-4-1. “They did not put their heads between their legs. I thought we dominated the third period. I felt it was going to come down to who got the dirty goal in front. They got it and we didn’t.”

The comeback by Belcher’s squad overshadowed what was a disappointing start to the game for the Green Knights. Notre Dame allowed three first period goals and had to claw back the rest of the way.

“You can’t spot any team three goals,” Belcher said. “It will be tough sledding the rest of the way.”

Whatever Belcher said to his team between the first and second periods clearly had the affect he desired as the Green Knights held a 14-8 shot advantage, picked up their intensity, controlled play in the Hamden zone and held a 3-1 advantage in goals scored to trail only 4-3 entering the third period.

Greg Caturano got the Green Knights on the scoreboard when he scored the first of Notre Dame’s two power play goals in the second period. Off an assist from Vin Paolillo, Caturano beat Turner from in front with 7:11 remaining in the middle period.

The Green Dragons immediately answered and looked as if they again would take control of the contest when Alexander Hernandez scored an unassisted goal just 30 seconds later for a 4-1 Hamden lead.

“We gave them opportunities by taking penalties,” Hall said. “Their power play is very good.”

That control never happened in the second period for Hamden as the Green Dragons gave Notre Dame a pair of power plays and the Green Knights capitalized on both.

Paolillo found Maselli with a perfect pass in front and Maselli quickly beat Turner for a power play goal to cut Hamden’s lead to 4-2 with 4:17 remaining in the second period.

With all the momentum on their side, the Green Knights capitalized 2:39 later when Ciaburro’s shot from the high slot glanced off the glove of Turner into the net to get Notre Dame within 4-3 with 1:38 left in the period.

The Green Dragons weathered an early array of shots by Notre Dame, being outshot 9-2 to start the game, before turning the opening period around.

Taking advantage of a nice bounce off the boards, Raif Harris found himself in front of Notre Dame goaltender Conor Hylton and quickly found the back of the net with 8:44 left in the opening period.

After Notre Dame’s Thomas Driscoll was denied in front by Turner, the Green Dragons again turned up the intensity. The end result was two goals by Blackwell in the final 2:10 of the first period.

“All week we talked about winning the one-on-one battles,” Blackwell said after finishing with two goals and two assists. “I think everyone is buying in. We were in a rough patch, but we are starting to come out of the valley. This is a huge win for us They are ranked third and we are not even in the top ten. It shows how good of a team we can be when we play together.”

Blackwell picked up a loose puck, circled in front of the goal and tucked a shot past Hylton for a 2-0 lead. With the Green Dragons still buzzing, Blackwell snuck a shot past Hylton off assists from Hernandez and McKiernan with 6.5 seconds left in the period for a 3-0 advantage.

“We are starting to do the little things well,” Hall said. “We are getting to the safer areas and we are protecting the house. We squandered a three-goal lead twice, but we kept it together. We try to keep things on an even keel.”

The scoring spree by Hamden took away from a start of the game which favored the Green Knights, but did not produce any results due to the play of Turner in goal.

Turner made a pair of solid saves early, denying Paddy Connors from the point and Maselli from the slot within 15 seconds just three minutes in. The sophomore goaltender then denied Paolillo from the slot with a pad save with 9:21 remaining in the opening period to keep the game scoreless.

Hernandez and McKiernan each finished with a goal and an assist for Hamden, while Ciaburro had two goals and an assist for the Green Knights.

Lindgren raising cancer awareness, helps organize fundraiser for 4-year-old fighting cancer

Amity's Gary Lindgren

Amity’s Gary Lindgren

Ever since Amity boys hockey coach Gary Lindgren won his battle with cancer in 2014, cancer awareness has been a part of his life.

As a result, the Spartans will be hosting an American Cancer Society-sponsored Coaches vs. Cancer game against SCC-SWC Division II rival Cheshire on Feb. 3 at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 8 p.m.

The game will be dedicated to Mickey Macholl, a 4-year-old boy who is battling Neuroblastoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. A portion of the proceeds will be going to the Macholl family to help with Mickey’s treatment.

“This is the first time we are doing this,” Lindgren said. “I came across information about Coaches vs. Cancer and called their representative Kelly Steward. I had her come in to go over the details.

This week’s Register/GameTimeCT Top 10 Hockey Poll

“I’m happy to coordinate this with (first-year Cheshire boys hockey coach) Anthony Giusto and the Cheshire hockey program. The game is dedicated to Mickey Macholl. I don’t know him but I know his grandfather Jim Eagan, the former girls basketball coach at Sacred Heart Academy and West Haven High.”

According to the American Cancer Society website, the Coaches vs. Cancer program empowers coaches, their teams, and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs and fundraising activities. Guided by the Coaches vs. Cancer Council, participating coaches help people with cancer today and to find cures to end the disease tomorrow, and have raised more than $87 million to help the American Cancer Society’s mission.

“This is certainly worthwhile and meaningful,” Lindgren said. “After everything that I went through, I’ve become more understanding and compassionate to others with cancer and also the loved ones affected. It’s nice to be able to help pay for the treatment moving forward.”

Both West Haven natives, Mickey Macholl’s parents, Mark and Rachel, have strong ties to Connecticut. Mark graduated from West Haven High and served as an Airman for the 103rd Air Force squadron in Orange. He served in operation Iraqi Freedom in Afghanistan and also served as junior varsity girls basketball coach and assistant varsity coach under Eagan at Sacred Heart Academy and West Haven High.

Rachel graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden and Merrimack College and came back to West Haven to teach at both Malloy and Savin Rock elementary schools. Rachel also worked as a counselor and Junior CIT supervisor for West Haven Parks and Recreation for 10 years.

Mark and Rachel moved to Wake Forest, North Carolina, shortly after marrying in 2005 to get away from the cold winters. But their parents and families live and work in West Haven and other surrounding cities in Connecticut.

According to Rachel Macholl, many of Mickey’s treatments are not covered by insurance and are very costly. She said the family has sought to cure Mickey by treating his whole body with chemotherapy, surgery, bone marrow transplant, radiation, and immunotherapy. Rachel also said Mickey is getting integrated treatments to naturally radiate his tumors, boost his immune system, and detoxify all toxins in his system.

“We are so grateful that coach Gary Lindgren and the parents, players and coaches for both Amity and Cheshire high schools have come together to help our son and bring awareness about Neuroblastoma and childhood cancer,” Rachel Macholl said. “If we have learned anything about people from this experience, it’s that there is so much good in this world.

“Every time we turn on the news or pick up a newspaper, we see atrocities that depict the worst in people. But we have seen nothing but the best in people since our little boy got diagnosed with cancer. It has been a very difficult challenge, to say the least. But with all of the love, support, and prayers from family, friends, and strangers, Mickey will win his fight.”

Due to his treatments, Mickey, his brothers Trey (age 8) and Tyce (5), and his parents won’t be able to attend the game.

Nice start  for North Haven

In the preseason, North Haven boys hockey coach Mike Silengo said forward J.J. Jensen would be an integral part of the team’s success.

While Jensen has made a huge impact and is the team’s leading scorer with nine goals and seven assists, a combination of factors have led to one of the Indians’ best starts at 5-1-1.

“J.J. centers our top line has been one of the reasons for our success,” Silengo said. “But we’ve been getting great goaltending and getting lots of production from our top two lines. We knew all along that if the boys worked hard and followed the blueprint team success would follow.”

Silengo said the most consistent player relied upon is goalie Justin Daddio, a transfer from Notre Dame-West Haven. In addition to Jensen, another top scorer is second line center Jason St. Peter with 11 goals. Left wing Pasquale Liuzzi has four goals and 10 assists. Josh Back is one of the top defensemen and has two goals and five assists.

“Justin has not disappointed,” Silengo said. “Pasquale has been a real work horse, a high energy guy and Josh anchors our defense.”

The Indians, a CIAC Division II team, has played two Division I teams and has two more scheduled late in the season. Silengo said playing against the higher caliber talent and the early success will help prepare the team for the post season.

“This can help our team develop and gain confidence,” Silengo said. “Any time you can challenge your team to play the top teams in the state, it can only help us when we play in our division.”

PORTLAND >> Cromwell shook off a slow start and routed Shoreline Conference neighbor Portland, 61-37, Tuesday night at Bengston Memorial Gymnasium.

The Panthers, winners of 7 of their last 8, improved to 10-3.

“We have a problem starting games and it’s cost us probably two of those games because we’re always trying to fight from behind,” Cromwell coach John Pinone said. “But tonight you’ve got to give the kids credit. They came out in the second half and played smarter. And we got some stops and that makes it a lot easier for us.”

Trailing 16-12 midway through the second quarter, the Panthers closed the first half with an 11-0 run. Cromwell carried their momentum into the third quarter and outscored Portland 24-5.

“We moved the ball better against their zone to start the third quarter,” Pinone said. “It took us awhile. The first half wasn’t one of our better first halves. To Portland’s credit, they slowed the tempo down and tried to take time off the clock.”

Senior guard Peter Dewey, who led all scorers with 18 points, drained four 3-pointers in the midst of the Panthers huge 35-5 run. Dewey made back-to-back treys late in the third to give the Panthers a 41-21 advantage.

Junior center Anthony Puntiel (seven points) followed with a conventional three-point play and senior Jake Anderson’s 3-pointer gave Cromwell a 47-21 lead after three.

“We moved the ball quicker and got some better looks,” Pinone added. “We did a better job of getting some dribble penetration, and have them collapse and then kick it out and making some shots. We had a really good quarter. We need to attack the zone like that all the time.”

Portland sophomore guard Dianta Highsmith scored six of his team-high 10 points to help the Highlanders build a 16-12 lead with 4:37 left in the second quarter.

The Highlanders (1-9), who have lost six straight, got as close as 25-21 after junior Jake Kostraba buried a 15-foot jumper early in the third quarter.

But Cromwell responded with 22 straight points.

“We defended much better, we got some turnovers and we got some easy baskets,” Pinone said.

Senior forward Sean DelValle scored nine points, while senior guard Terrance Natt chipped in eight points for the Panthers. Senior guard Jordan Vogt added six points for Portland.

Cromwell hosts SLC leader Old Saybrook on Friday night at 7 p.m. Portland is also at home on Friday (7 p.m.) against Coginchaug.
