MERIDEN >> This is the 33rd consecutive non-losing season for the Middletown High boys swim team. One  more win — MHS has five remaining dual meets — and the Blue Dragons will have clinched their 33rd consecutive winning season.

Middletown saw to that with an official 93-87 Central Connecticut Conference South win over Meriden — the cooperative team of Maloney and Platt — Tuesday afternoon at Platt High School. The score looks close, but it wasn’t as Middletown coach Trevor Charles swam the last two events as exhibition. Had he not done that, the final score would have been 113-85.

“My guys have done a nice job of stepping up in close meets,” said Charles, who saw his team improve to 7-2. “We still have some meets coming up that look to be close, too.”

Middletown, which is Class M in swimming, hasn’t done it the easy way through the years. This season outside of the CCC South, Charles has Class LL Glastonbury and Xavier, Class L Conard, Hall and South Windsor, and Class M East Lyme and Wethersfield on his schedule.

The meet was close for the first five events as Charles did some mixing and matching.

“This meet gave us an opportunity to build some versatility,” Charles said. “I was happy with the performances of several of our swimmers, such as Dylan Drescher [second in 100-yard butterfly], Jayson DeFrance [first in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.28 seconds; third in the 200-yard individual medley], Matt Joy [second in the 100-yard backstroke], Eric Olerud [third in the 500 freestyle and Chris Boller [100 breaststroke, exhibition].

“I was also happy with Jack Doherty’s times.”

Doherty, who is Middletown’s unbeaten All-American candidate, easily won the 200-yard freestyle (:47.26) and swam legs of the winning 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays.

“I think I’m about where at want to be at this point,” Doherty said. “I’m training hard and I’ve been doing pretty well, I think. I want to get better as I prepare for states. Today in the 200 I tried to pace myself and finish strong, not like a did a couple of weeks ago when I went out too fast.”

Charles said Doherty did exactly that, taking it relatively easy in the first 100 yards, then going to afterburners in the second 100. “It’s all about strategy and learning how to do things,” said Charles. “I was pleased with how he handled that race.”

Jacob Forrester won the 500-yard freestyle (5:39.42) in which he was not challenged, and the Dragons won all three relays. The team of Forrester, DeFrance, Matt Joy and Peter Flynn won the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.63), the 200-yard freestyle relay was won by the team of Tim Joy, Matt Joy, Evan Dunn and Doherty (1:36.36) and the team of Doherty, Dunn and the Joy brothers won the 400-yard freestyle (3:51.40).

Freshman Tyler Wenzel beat out three Meriden divers to win diving.

Meriden’s Colin Paddock won the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.43), Aiden Clancy won the 50-yard freestyle (:26.32) and Dan Coleman was a double winner, taking the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.15) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.25).

Middletown led 93-62 after the backstroke. It was at that point that Charles called off the dogs, giving Meriden 25 points for the last two events.

Middletown (7-2) is home with Avon Friday at 4 p.m.

Waterford celebrates with hero Colin Shannon after his buzzer-beating layup to beat NFA (Screen cap via TheDay.com)

It was yet another night of thrills in Connecticut boys basketball.

On Friday night, we had two #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters from East Catholic and Branford.

On Tuesday, we had three from Shelton’s Matt Terrasi felled Branford, Bunnell’s Zhyaire Fernandes topped New Fairfield and, finally, Waterford’s Colin Shannon broke Norwich Free Academy’s heart.

To be perfectly fair, it’s the first two weren’t true buzzer-beaters, in that they both came with two ticks on the clock. The last one was a gem.

Let’s take a look, shall we?

Up in Shelton, Terrasi hit a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to beat Branford, 47-44. It was a tough turnabout for Branford, which was coming off its own buzzer-beater the week before. H/T to Terrasi for sending this over.

Over in Bunnell, Zhyaire Fernandes did the same to New Fairfield with a 3-pointer to help the Bulldogs overcome what had been a disheartening 90-63 loss to Harding just a day before. This footage comes from @CTHoopsNews

But, that, too wasn’t quite a buzzer beater.

Now, Shannon’s shot… THAT was a buzzer-beater.

From The Day of New London’s live broadcast of the game, here’s Shannon, a junior, doing his best impression of Connor Lewis, his former teammate who happens to be the all-time king of GameTimeCT #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters (remember him???).

Down 63-62 with a mere 0.6 left on the click, Waterford needed something immediately. Sophomore Michael Buscetto fed Shannon, who grabbed and immediately hoisted the ball off the glass for the winning layup as the buzzer sounded in a stunning 64-63 Lancers victory.

Awesome. Just Awesome.

Here’s the footage from TheDay.com:

This has been #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters

Another night, another episode of #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters in boys basketball.

For this one, we take you up to Bristol where St. Paul’s Elijah Kennedy brought new meaning to the term “T-Town” when he broke Torrington with this 3-point dagger from the left corner in a 63-60 NVL victory Wednesday night.

The footage was captured in the stands by St. Paul baseball player Michael Dombrowski @mikedombrowski_, which came complete with a berserk scene from the student section:

Kennedy, a 6-foot junior, took an in-bounds pass from about midcourt, drove inside the 3-point line, then stepped back over it and swished his game-winner.

“That’s what’s up Eli #torchtown” Dombrowski wrote.

Junior forward Austin Jones led the way with 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocks while guards Mike Palmieri and Jackson Hines had 14 points apiece as St. Paul improved to 6-5. Torrington fell to 6-6.

It turned out to be quite the night for St. Paul basketball. The girls team defeated Torrington 51-39 for coach Joe Mone’s 300th career victory.

H/T to Kevin Roberts (@SportsonCT69) for bringing footage of Kennedy’s shot to our attention.

Wrestling: Baker gets 100th, No. 6 Middletown celebrates Senior Night with pin-fest

MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown’s sixth-ranked, undefeated wrestlers staged another Pin Festival Wednesday night, recording eight pins on their way to a 57-12 Central Connecticut Conference South win over Bristol Central in front of a noisy, near-capacity Senior Night crowd at Keigwin Middle School.

“Our ability to get pins is a huge difference,” said Middletown coach Mark Fong, who saw his team improve to 17-0. “It’s been our strength all year.”

The night started with a pin and ended with a pin.

The meet began at the 220 pound weight class and Middletown’s Tre’quan Weston pinned Mike Guzman with one minute, 17 seconds left in the second period. It ended with Jordan Yap’s pin of Connor Staubley at 195 pounds with 1:43 left in the second round.

Between those bookends, Middletown’s Tino Pusz at 113 pounds, Noah Sylvester at 120 pounds, Andre Rogers at 132 pounds, Jordan Baker — his 100th career win — at 138 pounds, Baki Kuroca at 170 pounds and Jayden Rodriguez at 182 pounds all recorded pins.

“What’s also good is that we didn’t give up any pins,” Fong said. “Even in the matches we lost, all were close and none were pins.”

For the uninitiated, a pin is worth six points while an ordinary win — there are some variations on that theme — is worth only three. Get eight pins and it’s tough to lose.

Despite the lop-sided score, the meet featured several hotly contested matches, two of which went to overtime. Bristol Central (12-4) won the heavyweight class when Chris Nizielski beat Max Cyr, 2-1, and at 126 pounds, when Middletown’s John Grasis beat Jake Hale in four overtimes, with the winning point coming just before the buzzer at the end of fourth OT.

“The final score is not indicative of the meet,” Fong said. “There were very competitive matches all night and again, those pins made a huge difference.”

Central won four of the 14 matches. Besides Nizielski’s win, Shane Oxton beat Isiah King, 11-6, at 145 pounds, Julian Galindez beat Tom Gatti, 3-2, at 152 pounds and Kuba Kreciglowa defeated Chris Tewksbury, 9-5, at 160 pounds.

In the remaining match, Middletown picked up six points when T.J. Pawlak was awarded what amounted to a forfeit win over Chris Trelli at 106 pounds when the referee called an illegal move against Trelli.

“The rules say if a wrestler makes an illegal move and his opponent is injured and can’t continue because of that move, then the win is awarded to the injured kid and it’s six points, like a pin,” Fong said. “At the time it was a huge point swing.”

Trelli was winning 9-1 when the move happened late in the third period. It was the third match of the night and took Middletown’s 6-3 lead to 12-3. Had that not happened, the meet would have been tied 6-6

“I thought we wrestled very well,” said Fong. “We were aggressive the whole night and we fought for every point. To keep Central from not getting any pins was significant because they have some very tough kids.”

Fong credited his senior class.

“Wrestling is a very tough sport,” he said. “If I could get eight freshmen to come out and stick with it through all four years of high school, I’d be set. But that rarely happens. This year I do have a solid group of seniors who stuck it out for four years [there are nine seniors on the team] and that’s why we are having a lot of success.

“We have depth all through our lineup.”

Middletown will participate in the Portland Invitational along with 15 other teams on Saturday. The Dragons have one CCC dual meet left at Berlin on Feb. 10.

SIMSBURY >> Northwest Catholic junior Ryan Sherba scored three goals — including two in the third period — to help No. 5 Northwest Catholic beat city rival Conard, 6-3 at the International Skating Center of Connecticut on Wednesday.

Anthony Ceolin added two goals and John Foster had one in the Lions’ eighth win of the season to complete the season sweep of the Chieftains by a combined 14-7 score.

The latest GameTimeCT / Register boys hockey top-10 poll

Four of Northwest Catholic’s goals came on the power play, which proved to be a real problem for Conard.

“They have a really great power play,” Conard coach Greg Raymer said. “Their power play is strong, they move the puck well — they’re a top team in the state.”

The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, but gave up two in the first three minutes of the second.

“The kids watch score and they realized that Conard lost their last two by quite a bit (12-1 vs. Xavier and 8-1 vs. Suffield-Granby-Windsor Locks) and we scored two and pretty much dominated that first period,” Northwest Catholic coach Don Melanson said. “We came out not ready to play, thinking ‘Oh, they’re going to give us the game.'”

But then Ceolin scored his second with 3:02 left in the period to regain the lead.

Sherba’s second goal came 2:07 into the third, but the Chieftains got one back a minute and a half later when Jordon Fongemie found the back of the net.

Five minutes later Northwest Catholic put the game away for good.

“We’ve been harping move the puck,” Melanson said. “And don’t force a bad play and both those goals they made the easy play.”

Ceolin scored on a power play and just 13 second later Sherba netted his third to give the Lions the 6-3 insurmountable lead.

“He is an energy player,” said Melanson on Sherba. “He’s the hardest worker on the ice. He’s not afraid of contact, not afraid of going in those dirty areas and two of his goals were rebound goals. In the right place, not afraid to go to the front of the net. He’s got great hands, great stamina and he’s quick so it helps.”

Zachary Polo and Brent Soucy also scored for Conard in the loss.

(Catherine Avalone – New Haven Register) Mercy captain Destine Perry drives to the hoop as Hand’s Gillian Draemer defends in a 77-56 win for the Mercy Tigers, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at Daniel Hand High School in Madison.

MADISON >> The highly anticipated SCC showdown between visiting Mercy and Hand was lopsided in Mercy’s favor.

A tenacious defensive effort in the first quarter set the tone, and second-ranked Mercy cruised to a 77-56 interdivision win Wednesday. The loss snapped Hand’s six-game winning streak. This was a rematch of last season’s SCC tournament championship game also won by Mercy

Mercy (13-1) led 25-7 after one quarter due to a defensive press that Hand (9-4) had difficulty breaking.

“We turned them over in the first quarter,” Mercy coach Tim Kohs said. “We did a really good job. I’m trying to figure out why we didn’t continue that. We lost a little bit of our aggressiveness (in the second quarter).”

Hand settled down in the second quarter and cut the lead to eight at one point late in the quarter. Mercy led 34-24 at halftime. Hand senior Paula Materin made four 3-pointers in the first half.

The first quarter deficit, though, was too much for Hand to overcome.

“If you take that first quarter out of it, we played them pretty even,” Hand coach Tim Tredwell said. “Our kids were tentative, they were a little timid. They looked like they were playing against a really big team that is ranked second in the state.

“It’s not very characteristic of them but, they’re young and they’re still working that out. This was their first shot at playing a high-ranked team. We’ll learn from it. We’ll be able to pull what we need from it and move forward.”

Normally a starter, Materin came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points. Materin has been battling illness and a wrist injury and did not practice all week. She was cleared to play on Wednesday.

“It was one of those things where we couldn’t start her because she hasn’t practiced in two days, but we were going to get her in right away,” Tredwell said. “She’s a shooter, the kid can hit 3s. She can hit it from any where. She’s worked so hard in the offseason. She developed her scoring ability, she’s strong and she finishes well. That’s why she’s going to play at the next level.”

Destine Perry led Mercy with 19 points. Sam Gallo had 14 points, Bella Santoro had 13 points and Meghan DeVille chipped in with 12 points for Mercy. Gallo and DeVille inside complemented the guard play of Perry and Santoro.

“Last year we were more guard-oriented,” Perry said. “Now we’re more post-oriented with Meghan and Sam in there. I don’t think anyone can really guard them in there.”

NEW HAVEN >> This edition of the storied Hillhouse-Wilbur Cross boys basketball rivalry will be remembered for many different reasons.

First, the atmosphere as over 2,200 people filled the Floyd Little Athletic Center for this top-10 matchup. Second, four players on each team reached double figures.

And third, the comeback that Hillhouse mounted to not only force overtime, but somehow pull out a 78-76 overtime win over Cross.

“I can’t remember playing in a game of this magnitude with the atmosphere that was in here,” Hillhouse coach Renard Sutton said.

The only lead ninth-ranked Hillhouse (9-2) held in regulation was 2-0. Eighth-ranked Wilbur Cross (9-2) held a 16-point lead (50-34) in the third quarter and a 13-point edge (60-47) early in the fourth.

The Governors built that lead without Robert Durant, who scored nine points in the first quarter but just two the rest of the way before fouling out. But Hillhouse slowly made up the deficit, capped by Jalil Wilkerson’s deep three-point shot with 5 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 69.

“It looked good when it left my hands. I was happy we could tie the game up and send it to overtime,” Wilkerson said.

Said Sutton: “He’s a shooter. We live by the three and we die by the three. When it came down to the big-time shots, Jalil was able to step up and hit a big one.”

Tyler Douglas gave Hillhouse the lead for good, 73-72, with 2:57 left in overtime. Then Christian Adams stepped to the forefront for the Academics.

The sophomore, who led the Academics with 19 points, not only hit three free throws to expand the lead, he also blocked Justin Wagner’s shot, and grabbed the rebound before getting fouled.

“I didn’t want to give up the easy layup,” Adams said of his block.

Sutton credited his coaching staff with their decisions down the stretch. “The kids bought into what my staff put together to pull it out.”

The Governors were able to withstand Durant’s foul trouble in the first half. Others stepped up, led by Malik Alston’s 21 points and Will Antrum’s 16. But when Durant fouled out with 3:27 left, Cross couldn’t protect its 64-59 lead.

“It’s not just about that he fouled out, it’s how he fouled out (on a charge),” Cross coach Kevin Walton said. “All we ask our kids to do is be consistent, lay it on the line, and that’s what they did. Give Hilhouse credit, they made plays, we knew they would keep fighting. Jalil made a heckuva shot at the end of the game. It should have never got to that point.”

Walton credited his kids’ effort and the atmosphere, but was clearly upset of how the game was officiated, although never actually saying the word officials after the game.

“There were three teams out there and two teams played great,” Walton said. “You were here, you watched the game, you saw the game, everybody in this gym saw the game. As educators, our job is to lift kids up. My kids played hard, they deserved to win and the game. It should be decides on the court with the kids. I’m upset about it.”
